An evaluation of the health, criminal justice, and service use outcomes of the Ministry of Health assuming responsibility for prison health care services in BC (PRISM-BC)

Project Funding: Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR)

Project Period: 2023-2026

This project will use linked health and corrections records over a 10-year period to evaluate the impact of transferring health care delivery inside British Columbia’s provincial correctional centres from the provincial ministry of justice to a provincial health authority. We will use data from approximately five years before and five years after the transfer to identify changes in health care delivery, death from overdose and all-causes, and crime. Findings from this project can be used to inform health care policies in both corrections and community settings and contribute to the improvement of health care services for people who experience incarceration.
